Cats make the perfect pets. They like to keep themselves clean and are also affectionate and playful. They’re also a little low maintenance when compared to dogs as they do not need much space and attention and can keep themselves entertained.
However, there are certain things you need to take care of when you plan to get your furry little friend home.
You need to have your cat registered and microchipped with updated details for safety reasons. You can also attach your cat’s name and your phone number on the collar so she can be traced back to you in case she gets lost.
Cats need to eat animal protein to survive. We all know how much cats love to eat fish, but only feeding them with only fish doesn’t provide the necessary nutrition.
Get high quality cat food with meat as the main ingredient, suited best as per her life stage for your cat. They also need natural foods like rash and fresh meat, chicken and bones.
Canned food can be used as a treat but should as the whole meal as it can increase the risk of dental diseases.
Foods not to feed your cat:
- Onions and garlic
- Manufactured meat
- cow’s milk
Cats like to keep themselves and their surroundings clean. That’s why the litter trays need to be maintained clean for cats to use. If the litter trays are not clean, it can lead to accidents as they may decide to urinate someplace else. Some cats also like certain types of litter and litter trays. So make sure the tray and litter you get is preferred by your cat. Cats do not like to share the litter trays. If you have more than one cat, you need dedicated litter trays for each of them.
Cats should get used to the litter tray as soon as you get them home. Keep the tray in a quiet corner away from the food and water.
Domestic cats are used to being indoors and should stay inside. It prevents them from dangers like predators, injuries and various infections and diseases they can catch from the outdoors. If your cats like to go outdoors, make sure she is inside during the night at least.
Desexing has various health benefits for cats. Other than preventing your cat from having unwanted litters, desexing can also help in reducing the risk of cancer. In females, it can decrease the chances of mammary cancer. And, in males, it decreases the chances of prostate and testicular cancer.
Other than that, desexing also reduces the risk of Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) and helps calming down aggression in cats.
Keep your cat busy with cat toys so she stays occupied and doesn’t cause any damage around the house. Certain toys also provide mental exercises for cats and can get them to exercise their chasing and pouncing instincts.
Regular grooming of cats is important for various reasons. It keeps their hair soft and prevents them from getting matted. Cats usually love grooming and consider the grooming time as bonding time. If your cat has long fur, then regular grooming is even more important to prevent your house getting covered in cat fur.
Cats require regular check-ups and yearly vaccinations and boosters, including vaccinations against flu. All cats require regular deworming and flea control to keep them healthy and parasite free.
If you notice any unusual symptoms in your cat, it is advised to visit the veterinarian at once.
